Dancing in the arms of God

Galatians 5 tells us that the flesh wars with the Spirit, but we who are in Christ, are called to be in step with the Spirit, and when we are, we reflect His character, and I think that is like dancing in the arms of God. Being in step requires letting God lead, being neither ahead, nor behind, but with, and trusting Him to orchestrate my life into a beautiful dance, with music and joy, even in the tough times.

Day of Atonement

For the Western year 2006, the Day of Atonement is from sunset of October 1 to sunset of October 2.

Leviticus 23:26-32
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD. And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people. And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath."

The law demands the death penalty for sin. In the old covenant, animal sacrifice was required to temporarily satisfy the law until Messiah would come and be the perfect and complete fulfillment of the law. The Day of Atonement was a solemn day and a Holy day. On this day, a High Priest would go to the Temple, complete a complex set of sacrifices to atone for his sins and the sins of the people, enter the Holy of Holies, and then announce the Aaronic blessing over the people. (Leviticus 16) This was the only day of the year anyone entered the the Holy of Holies, and the only day the sacred Name of God (tetragramatron YHVH) was invoked.

God’s Spirit resided in the Holy of Holies above the Mercy Seat on the Ark of the Covenant. When the High Priest entered the Temple, a rope would be tied around his ankle so if he died, he could be pulled out. This was serious business, entered into with fear and reverence. Leviticus describes the sacrifices. There was a bull as a burnt offering, and two goats, one to take the punishment of death, one to take the curse (the scapegoat) and be banished from the people, sent into the wilderness to die alone. Okay, so have you ever seen a goat? Looked into its sweet, innocent, trusting face? Pet its soft wooly coat? Then led it to slaughter? People today can be so immune to the gravity of death sacrifice because we don’t have to deal directly with it. The Day of Atonement was meant to make us stop and consider the seriousness of sin, and the enormous penalty required for that sin.

When Yeshua Ha-Mashiach (Messiah) (Jesus Christ) died on the cross at Calvary, He became the propitiation (atonement sacrifice) for the sins of mankind, once, for all. Animal sacrifices merely stood in the gap to satisfy the requirements of the law until the Messiah would come and redeem the souls of every human being who was covered in the gap from the animal sacrifice, or called upon the Name of Jesus as Savior and Lord. He became the sin offering and the scapegoat, shedding His blood, and taking our curse from sin upon Himself. The veil was torn in two, and later the temple was destroyed, because there no longer existed a need for a temple or Holy of Holies. Jesus became our High Priest, taking us directly to the Father in Heaven. Our bodies became the temples where the Spirit of God dwells in every believer.

Hebrews 9:11-14
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the Living God.

Hebrews 9: 22-28
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer Himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then He would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Today, the Day of Atonement is still observed by those who call upon the Name of Yeshua as a day to consider God with the fear and awe He deserves through fasting, reflecting, repenting, and praising God for the sacrifice of His Son which has redeemed us, and allowed our names to be written in the lamb’s book of life! It is a solemn day, and a Holy day, to be observed throughout all generations (Leviticus 23) till He returns and takes us home to Heaven.

Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh
Adonai Elohim tz'va-oat
Ah-sher ha-ya v'ho-ve v'ya-vo

Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God of Hosts (Almighty)
Who was and is, and is to come. (Revelation
4:8)
